The full-scale reproduction of the original Fort Christmas that was built on Christmas Day in 1837 is impressive, but that’s just the beginning of this diverse park. Located off of State Road 50 in eastern Orange County (Orlando) in the town of Christmas, Fort Christmas Historical Park offers a full compliment of historical structures and tools. There is a Florida Cracker house and 8 pioneer homes, all faithfully restored, along with a schoolhouse, lunchroom and post office. A sugar cane mill and farm/ranch tools complete the effect of taking you back well over 100 years…before electricity, plumbing and air conditioning. A simpler life in many ways, but certainly not an easier one.
The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Open areas are complimented with stands of pine and Spanish moss-draped oaks, along with 3 small ponds. There are pavilions, bathrooms, picnic areas and a kids playground all tucked under massive shade trees. But what really surprised me is that there’s also a baseball field, tennis court and basketball court here. Kudos to Orange County Parks & Recreation for thinking of everything! Did I mention it’s FREE? And if you want to spend more time in Christmas there are 4 other excellent places to explore right here: Tosohatchee Wildlife Management Area, Seminole Ranch Wildlife Management Area, Savage/Christmas Creek Preserve and Orlando Wetlands Park.
