You want Epic Ride Hall of Fame mountain biking in Florida? That would be Alafia River State Park, according to the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA). After riding more than 10 miles out here, I whole-heartedly agree.
Phosphate mining gouged the land mercilessly many years ago, but then nature was allowed to reclaim the land. Let me tell you, she reclaimed it in spectacular fashion — the miniature mountains and gorges are lush with a great diversity of life. The unique topography gives it as close to a mountainous feel as you’ll find in Florida.
Major kudos to the SWAMP Mountain Bike Club and the hundreds of volunteers that have made these 17 miles of trails truly outstanding…and continue to maintain and improve them. With 4 levels of difficulty clearly marked, there are trails for every skill level. The Easy trails are perfect for the entire family. The Intermediate trails are a bit more challenging…in fact, they were plenty for me. There are also Advanced (Black Diamond) and Expert (Double Black Diamond). Having neither the right equipment nor skillset, I didn’t attempt those…I know my limits.
Check out the Photo Gallery, the map of my ride below, and the links provided. I think you’ll agree it’s worth a drive — and just $4 for a single person or $5 for up to 8 in one vehicle. You can’t beat that. For other great rides, hikes, paddles, and more, check out our Bucket List and Where-to-Go.
