Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park

Lower Wekiva River Preserve State Park offers a variety of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, from hiking to paddling to horseback riding/camping…all centered around the Wild & Scenic Wekiva River and its watershed. It’s also home to Katie’s Landing, a beautiful park along the river that offers a launch for paddlers, as well as restroom facilities and picnic areas.

This diverse park straddles the river, one side in Seminole County, the other in Lake County. Hikers can use the southern entrance at 8300 W. State Road 46, Sanford, FL 32711 — although you can also access these trails across the street from Katie’s Landing, located at 262 Wekiva Park Drive, Sanford, FL 32711. There is a WonderMap below for one of the hiking routes.

For paddling, fishing and picnicking, Katie’s Landing is a beautiful spot. Classic Florida oaks draped in Spanish moss dominate the grounds, accompanied by a large stand of bamboo and cypress trees at the river. While it’s part of LWRPSP, it feels like a park in & of itself. This is a great launch point for paddlers, whether you want to paddle upstream or down. If you’re thinking of paddling, check out our feature on the Wild & Scenic Wekiva River — photos, videos and WonderMaps.

The 3rd entrance is the Fechtel Tract at 38015 Fechtel Road, Eustis, FL 32726, in Lake County. This entrance is all about equestrian activities, from simply riding the trails to camping. Bring your own horse(s) or hook up with Cactus Jack’s at http://www.rockspringsruntrailrides.com/, who also operates the equestrian concession at nearby Rock Springs Run State Reserve.

This park is both a designated Great Florida Birding & Wildlife Trail site and a Greenways & Trails site. The entire area is famous for its wildlife, including Florida black bears, alligators, coyotes, turkeys, deer, wading birds and raptors. Away from the hustle and bustle that dominates Central Florida, this is a sweet park no matter what activity you choose.

Please check out the Photo Gallery, videos (below) and the WonderMaps (below), then make a point of placing this park high on your Bucket List.
