Where can you find all 45 species of birds that breed in north Florida hardwood forests in a single preserve? That would only be at San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park in Gainesville, just 6 miles down the road from the Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park.
This 7,000+ acre state park boasts at least 18 distinct biological communities that encompass nearly every major forest type in north Florida. San Felasco Hammock is home to one of the few remaining mature forests in the state. Significant elevation changes (for Florida) provide for rich biodiversity, from high, dry pine forests to lowland swamps…not to mention great hiking, biking and horseback riding.
The southern 2/3 of the park is designated hiking only, an effort to enhance your wilderness experience. The northern 1/3 is multi-use, incorporating hiking, biking and equestrian trails. The bike trails and equestrian trails are separated, except at some major intersections. Hikers are welcome to use either.
San Felasco offers nearly 20 miles of single track cross-country bike trails, ranging from short, easy rides to longer intermediate and advanced trails. The nicely varying terrain and primal forest makes this a Florida mountain biking paradise. Equestrians can enjoy 15+ miles of terrain, some single track and some that can accommodate carriages.
My hike here was a combination of the Moonshine Creek Trail and the Creek Sink Trail. Though only a short hike (2.44 miles), this was a great sampling of the varied terrain and habitats the park offers. I’m definitely coming back, probably with my mountain bike. Open 8 a.m. until sundown, 365 day/year. Just $4 per car with up to 8 passengers, payable at honor boxes.
