Santos Mountain Bike Trails

The Santos Mountain Bike Trails are truly epic. That’s not just my humble opinion. They’ve actually been designated an Epic Ride by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) — not many trails earn such status. Major kudos to the Ocala Mountain Bike Association (OMBA), Florida State Parks’ Office of Greenways and Trails, and all the volunteers that made and keep this trail system outstanding.

There are more than 80 miles of off-road trails meandering throughout this fairytale forest. Every mountain biking skill level can enjoy a great day of riding, whether a casual family ride with the kids, something a bit more challenging, or serious expert courses. These three levels are all well marked and the trails are incredibly well maintained.

Personally, I rode the easy and intermediate trails. No black diamonds or double black diamonds for me and my fat bike. I did ride a couple of wood features later in the day, once they had a chance to completely dry out. Wet wood track = pain. In several areas the trails offer sections where you can choose the easy way or hard way for a short distance, like 30 to 50 yards. There are even a couple of specialty tracks right in the parking lot.

I encourage you to check out this world-class mountain bike trail system. In fact, take a look at the Photo Gallery of my ride from the Santos Trailhead through the Vortex to deep within the Spider Kingdom and back. Check out the map of my ride (below) and the links provided, then start packing your bike(s).

Did I mention it’s FREE? Incredible, right? Rather hike? You can do that here, too…if the Florida National Scenic Trail suits you. Horseback? Yup. Even wagons. The trails are all kept separate, except intersections and other short merges. FREE. You should go…
