Wekiwa Springs State Park

The central feature of Wekiwa Springs State Park is the spring pool, as you might expect. It’s a picture-perfect paradise of sparkling aquamarine waters, about 45 million gallons per day erupting from 2 vents, filling the 105 foot diameter pool to an average depth of 5 feet. But that’s just the beginning.

This magnificent spring pool is the headwaters of the Wekiva River, a designated Wild & Scenic River. Just downstream from the pool is a canoe & kayak concession, or you can launch your own…but the trek from the parking lot to the launch site is no fun for a single paddler without a dolly. Whether you rent or bring your own, a day on the Wekiva is always a good day, in my experience. And less than 3/4 of a mile downstream is Rock Springs Run, a magnificent tributary that starts at Kelly Park in Apopka. This is a great paddle and home to Wekiwa Springs State Park’s remote camp sites. The rivers will be covered in Part 2, coming soon…

But that’s not all! More, you say? As it turns out, lots more. Like 7,000 acres. They list 13 miles of trails, but with all the side trails and service roads, there are at least 20 miles of classic central Florida hiking available. Some of these are also for bicycles and some for horses, as well. But the majority are just for foot traffic.

I’ve done several hikes In Wekiwa Springs State Park, from short loops to the grand loop. Best part? The spring pool was waiting for me when I got back. So refreshing after hiking miles in 90+ heat!

Camping is available here, including primitive campsites that can only be reached by water. Of course, if you want the full hook-up, they have that, too. Not to mention a sweet resort cabin located right on the Wekiva River (3 bedroom/3 bath). A. Ma. Zing. With so much to do here, you may want to plan to stay for a few days…maybe a week. Or two. Two would be nice. But even if you can only spend half a day, you’re sure to be amazed.

Must be expensive to visit this awesome place, right? How about $6 for up to 8 people in 1 vehicle? Going alone? $4, please. Not even Amazon can beat that kind of pricing! So check out the Photo Gallery, then put Wekiwa Springs State Park at the top of your Bucket List and make a point of checking out this incredible natural wonder.
